Gujarat: MYSY income limit to be raised to Rs 8 lakh?

Looking to consolidate its forward caste base ahead of the assembly elections next year, the Bhupendra Patel-led BJP government is reported to have expedited deliberations on raising the income limit for benefits under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Swavlamban Yojana (MYSY) from Rs 6 lakh per annum to Rs 8 lakh. The move aims to widen the coverage of the scheme that covers persons from economically weaker sections in the general category i.e. those not covered by SC, ST and OBC reservations.

Since 2015-16, when the MYSY scheme was implemented as an appeasement to agitating Patidars demanding quota, a total of 2,76,172 students have availed of benefits under MYSY, with Rs 1,153 crore paid to students. In 2019-20, some 63,546 students availed of benefits totalling Rs 282 crore.
